The UEFA Champions League Quarter Final draw draw took place on Friday 18th March and here are my thoughts on the four ties:
Wolfsburg (Ger) v Real Madrid (Spa)
Wolfsburg arguably got the easier draw in the last round and that was clearly evident when they brushed past Gent 4-2 on aggregate. Real Madrid on the other hand had a much tougher encounter against AC Milan. The 4-0 aggregate score didn’t show a true reflection of the tie as AC Milan missed a handful of chances in the second leg to pull the first leg deficit back. The glorious missed chances came back to haunt them as they eventually end on to lose by quite a large margin. I can see this quarter final tie being one way traffic but it depends which Real Madrid team turns up. Wolfsburg have some great individual talent but Madrid are that one step better. The individual talent of Madrid have the potential to tear this Wolfsburg team apart but they must sharpen up their defence.
Bayern Munich (Ger) v Benfica (Por)
Bayern Munich scraped through the last round coming back from 4-2 on aggregate and 20 minutes to go in the second leg at home to Juventus. A wonderful comeback from the German champions proved why Pep Guardiola’s focus remains on the job in hand rather than his one at Manchester City. Benfica won’t be putting up the same fight as Juventus did and I can see Bayern Munich brushing past the Portuguese side without any trouble.
Paris St-Germain (Fra) v Manchester City (Eng)
The conquerers of Chelsea face another battle against a Premier League side in the form of Manchester City. It could have been worse for City had they drawn Barcelona who have knocked them out of the previous two campaigns but I believe they will be fairly please with the draw. However, with City’s current injuries, this could be a very tricky tie against a PSG team who have won the French League with two months to spare. Manchester City will fancy their chances in this tie especially with the second leg being back at the Etihad Stadium but it all depends on how well they do in Paris. This game will have a lot attacking talent on show and for me the big clash will be Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Sergio Aguero. If City can get an away goal in Paris and keep the score fairly close then they will have a massive opportunity of making it into the semi finals and I believe they will go through.
Barcelona (Spa) v Atletico Madrid (Spa)
This is probably the tastiest tie of the quarter finals. Barcelona are top of La Liga and Atletico Madrid sit 2nd. This tie will be very close and will be a tough one to call. Both teams have talent and I think this goes down to who has the better home form. Barcelona are the superior team but I don’t think they will have it all their own way. I can see Barcelona winning the first leg by a small margin with the quality that they have but the second leg will be very close and probably end in draw. Many people have Barcelona down as their tip to win the the entire tournament but I wouldn’t be surprised if Atletico Madrid do a job on them or at least give them a scare.
The quarter-finals will take place on 5-6 April and 12-13 April.
