The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup got under way today as hosts England played India on the opening day. England won the toss and put India in to bat. India made a great start with Mandhana and Raut putting on 144 for the first wicket. England’s bowlers really struggled against India’s opening batsmen. Mandhana was eventually out for 90 after being caught by Hazell off Knight’s bowling. Raut continued to punish the England bowlers and was caught on 86 by Wyatt. Raj came in at number 3 for India and made 71 as India put on 281 runs for their 50 overs.
England needed a record run chase to win the match and started off slowly when Beaumont and Taylor fell in quick succession leaving England 42-2 after 11 overs. Knight then came to the crease and made a solid 46 before being run out. This was the first of 4 run outs. However, at one point, It looked as though England were going to chase down the total as Wilson and Brunt took England past 200 with Wilson top scoring with 81 but it wasn’t enough as England fell short and were bowled out for 246 with India winning by 35 runs.
